A Graveyard Adventure for All Ages By Neil Gaiman
By fusdhyt, 23:12The Graveyard Book follows an orphan as he finds asylum, nurture, and eventually, help in avenging his parents’ murder, from the ghosts in a cemetery . Tenderly written, this chilling tale affirms love’s power to transcend all obstacles, even evil and death. Although officially a Newberry Award young adult selection, this has intergenerational appeal.
We meet Nobody Owens in adventuresome toddlerhood, after the mysterious Jack, a mythic figure of unmitigated nastiness, has just taken the lives of his parents. The little fellow escapes both house, and murderer’s knife, for the nearby graveyard. There, under the tutelage of its otherworldly ‘residents’, Nobody, or Bod, attains a surprisingly well-educated adolescence . He even experiences the beginnings of romantic stirrings when his former playmate Scarlett relocates to his neighborhood.
Bod finally eliminates Jack, assisted by ghostly training in Slipping, Fading and navigating parallel worlds e.g., Ghulheim. Gaiman’s plotting, as skillfully tight as a rigorous critical writing essay, allows Bod to manipulate the situation, but ultimately, Jack’s undoing is lust for evil power. This resolves the disconcerting moral dilemma of a kid killing an adult
The book, like well-crafted custom writing papers, affirms the diversity of effective parental love. It can also be read as an encomium to alternative, or homeschooling. Bod’s bravery and persistence are most inspiring, both for kids and grown-ups, recalling C.S. Lewis’s Narnia heroes
Gaiman is no stranger to speculative fiction, with Sandman, Coraline, and Dr. Who to his credit . This is a worthy read for grave aficionados of every age.
